The Ateco codes are alpha-numeric codes used to classify ATECO "ATtività ECOnomiche" (economic activities) and by the Italian National Institute of Statistics (ISTAT) for national statistical surveys of economic nature. This classification has also been valid since 2008 for communications and declarations to the Revenue Agency and the ATECO 2007 version is currently in use, which came into force on 1 January 2008, which replaces the previous ATECO 2002, adopted in 2002 to update the ATECO 1991.

The 2007 Ateco codes, approved by a specifically set up management committee, represent a single classification for both the Revenue Agency and the Chambers of Commerce.

The classification includes various levels of detail, from a classification of the macro activity gradually down to a detail, for example:

  • section F: construction;
    • division 43: specialized construction work;
      • group 43.2: installation of electrical, plumbing systems and other construction and installation works;
        • class 43.21: installation of electrical systems;
          • category 43.21.01: installation of electrical systems in buildings or other construction works (including maintenance and repairs).
